In preparation for the upcoming interview with Pulse2 Magazine (a business enterprise digital publication), Gregory Darling, our founder, shared insights about his background, the journey of AST Networks, and our vision for the future. Below are some key highlights from the interview that underscore our company’s ethos, achievements, and aspirations.
From Shipping to Satellites: A 40-Year Journey
Gregory Darling's career began at Gardline Shipping, where he worked for 40 years, culminating in his role as Chairman. He founded AST Networks in 1992, recognising the untapped potential of satellite communications. His vision has guided us from a small start-up to an industry leader over the past three decades.
The Origin of AST Networks
The idea of AST Networks emerged from a real-world problem Gregory Darling encountered whilst operating a Gardline vessel off West Africa. Faced with unreliable communication systems, he saw the opportunity for a better, simpler approach. The purchase and implementation of an early satellite system led to the realisation that satellite communications were set to revolutionise logistics, and thus, AST was born.
Innovation Drives Our Success
Gregory’s favourite memories are rooted in innovation. AST Networks has always been ahead of the curve, from introducing ready-to-use satellite phones in Harrods, to pioneering satellite payphones on ships. Our team has repeatedly pushed boundaries, developing, and patenting antenna systems, and launching the Global Mobile Phone. This commitment to innovation remains a cornerstone of our success.
Core Products & Services
AST Networks offers integrated satellite communication solutions designed to work in the most remote areas. Our key offerings include backup systems, failover options, secure internet networks, and technical support tailored to specific customer needs.
Overcoming Industry Challenges
In a fast-evolving sector, innovation is key. AST Networks has transformed from a voice communication provider to a network and software solutions company. Gregory highlighted how strong leadership, and a solid HR strategy have helped us adapt, ensuring our team is aligned with the company’s changing goals.
Adapting to Technological Change
Since the launch of AST Networks, technology has advanced exponentially. Starting with telex and early computers, today we’re working in an era of instant internet, cybersecurity, and low-latency satellite communications. Our investment in both people and infrastructure – such as customer portals and support software – has helped us keep our competitive edge.
Milestones in AST Networks’ Journey
From adopting Inmarsat and Iridium satellite phones, to establishing a global presence across Europe, the Americas, and Asia Pacific, AST Networks’ growth has been marked by milestones. Our shift toward becoming a remote data company, and our investment in LEO technology and software solutions have further strengthened our position.
A Self-Funded Success
One point of pride Gregory emphasised is that AST Networks is fully self-funded. This has allowed us to maintain control over our growth, reinvesting profits to fuel innovation and expansion. With annual revenue now at $100 million, we continue to drive sustainable, long-term success.
Our Market Opportunity
The total addressable market (TAM) AST targeting stand at approximately $2 billion. This figure represents the full potential of our offerings across various industries and regions, showcasing the vast growth opportunities we aim to capture.
What Sets Us Apart
What differentiates AST Networks from competitors, is our agility and system-agnostic approach. We’re not tied to any specific supplier or technology, which allows us to adapt to customer needs quickly and efficiently. As Gregory aptly put it; “It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it.”
Future Growth Goals
Our future lies in leveraging software-driven digital solutions to improve operational efficiency for our customers. Whether its ensuring vessels switch to the most cost-effective communication system, or monitoring remote equipment to prevent downtime, we aim to make operations more efficient through satellite technology.
Looking Ahead to 2025
With financial stability, the rise of LEO technologies, and the maturity of our software solutions, Gregory is optimistic about AST’s future. He sees 2025 as a year of growth and opportunity for the whole team as we continue to evolve in a dynamic business landscape.
